The Parables of Christ no. 42

New Cloth on old Garment and New Wine in Old skins

Wednesday, May 22, 2004

Rev. Brian Kocourek

This evening I would like to continue with our study on the parables of Christ and we shall continue with this study of the Parable of the new Cloth as we found in Matthew 9, Mark 2, and Luke chapter 5.

MATTHEW 9:16 ¶ No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

MARK 2:21   No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. 22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

LUKE 5:36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was [taken] out of the new agreeth not with the old. 37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. 38    But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. 39 No man also having drunk old [wine] straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

Now, in order to understand what this parable means in this hour, we must first understand what some of these symbols that are represented in this parable.

As you can see from the parable that there are actually two parables Christ tells us in these three scriptural references, and yet he is driving home the same point in each of them. So let’s just read the first part of each parable so we can focus on that part and then the second part, and finally bring them together to see how they tie together.

MATTHEW 9:16 ¶ No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

MARK 2:21   No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.

LUKE 5:36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was [taken] out of the new agreeth not with the old.

Now, as we have read this parable from three sources, Matthew Mark and Luke,  and in the mouth of three witnesses let all things be established.  So we see then, that in each of the parables, we are told that no man would put a new cloth on an old garment. So we have two things here, a new piece of cloth, and an old garment.

Now, the key to understanding this parable is that we must know what these two things symbolize.

Therefore, we ask ourselves, what do these two symbols represent?

1)     What does this new piece of cloth represent? And secondly,

2)     What does the old garment represent?

Now, a garment is something that you wear that has been made from a piece of cloth that has been cut and sown together and fashioned into something that you wear.

So we are looking at a parable that speaks of a garment which is old and worn and a pice of cloth that is new and fresh. And the comment that Jesus makes is no man would place a new piece of cloth upon an old garment lest they not agree or not fit, and the one would rend or cause to rip the other.

In other words, if you have a new piece of cloth that has not yet been washed, it still has room for shrinkage. But the old garment has already been worn and has already gone through its shrinking cycles, and if you place a new piece that can shrink on an old piece that can not shrink, then when you wash the garment it will rip.

And this is what Jesus is warning us about through this parable, because the garment new or old must be washed by the washing of water by the word.

EPHESIANS 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Now to find our answer, and to be sure that they are correct, we must  go to our vindicated source, and read for ours selves. And so from the Paradox, we hear brother Branham say…

Paradox a 65-0117 P:22 Now, we find Joshua representing grace, or some propitiation, that it could not exist in the same time that law was in existence. Neither does any message, that forwards the people on, ever coincide with a past message. It will not do it. That's where you have trouble today. Jesus said, "Does any person take a new piece of garment and put it into an old, or put the new wine into old bottles? They perish. It bursts them open." They can't stand it. And Joshua could not at all become into his ministry until after Moses was gone. So you see the very first verse here, "Moses My servant is dead; now arise and take this people to the promised land." Moses, representing the law, had served its time. It's, the law had served its time.

Notice that Brother Branham is talking about forwarding the people.  That means that God does not want the people to ever stop in their forward progress. Because if you are not going forward, you are going backward.

ANOINTED ONES AT END TIME  65-0725M 233 You think that Life would ever go back after that old shucks dried up, ever go back and live in it again? It never does. "For it is impossible for those which were once enlightened and didn't move on with the Word as it come to pass..." They're dead, gone. "And the thorns and thistles which is nigh unto rejection, whose end is to be burned...".

GOD IN SIMPLICITY  63-0317M   20-3  {113}    It is strange to think how that God does such a thing as that. God will hide Himself in something so simple that'll cause the wise to miss it a million miles and then turn right back around in that, some simple thing in the simplicity of His way of working and reveal Hisself right out again. I thought it made a text that we might study this before we go into the great teachings of the Seven Seals. Many miss Him by the way He reveals Himself. Now, man has their own ideas of what God ought to be and what God is going to do; and as I have made the old statement many times that man still remains man. Man is always giving God praise for what He did do, and always looking forward to what He will do, and ignoring what He's doing. See, see?  20-5  {114}    That's the way they miss it. They look back and see what a great thing He done, but they fail to see what a simple thing He used to do it with. See? And then they look forward and see a great thing coming that's going to happen, and nine times out of ten, it's already happening right around them, and it's so simple that they don't know it. See?

And so we see that men always try to take the new patch or New Message that God brings and they try to make it fit with their old theology or denominational thinking and it just will not match up. And then what happens? The new patch causes a rift in the old garment, and begins to tear way from it, and causes a big rift to take place, and then they want to blame the new patch? Why not blame their stupidity.

I like the way the NIV translates Isaiah 28: 8 All the tables are covered with vomit and there is not a spot without filth. And what is vomit but the food from another day. So all the pulpits are covered  with yesterdays food. That is why in the wilderness they were commanded to burn what was left after eating, because they were not to carry over any food to the next day.

9 “Who is it he is trying to teach? To whom is he explaining his Message? Oh, I like that because to explain His Message means he is giving the right understanding of it. And this Scripture tells us He has  come in this hour to do just that but they do not want it. To children weaned from their milk, to those just taken from the breast?

10 For it is (what is? His Message to them is ) Do and do, do and do, rule on rule, rule on rule; a little here, a little there."

11 Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, Notice it tells us God will speak to this people using foreign lips, not Jewish, but gentile lips,

12 to whom he said, "This is the resting place, let the weary rest"; and, "This is the place of repose"—(Notice the place of my repose, the place of my presence) but they would not listen.

13 So then, (so then what? So then because they would not listen) the word of the LORD to them will become: Do and do, do and do, rule on rule, rule on rule; a little here, a little there-- so that they will go and fall backward, be injured and snared and captured.

Notice because they would not enter into His presence, which is His rest, the message will become to them rule on rule rule on rule, and do and do, and do and do. In other words, they will go backwards and fall back into legalism.  so that they will go and fall backward,(notice if you are not going forward you must be going back wards, for you can not stand still when the Pillar of Fire is Moving on. And then what will happen? They will be ) be injured and snared and captured.

That’s why it is so important for us to recognize what God is doing now. Not looking back 20 years ago or 40 years ago, or 50 years ago. We know what has happened, but that is not how they miss Him. They miss Him by not seeing Him as He is, not as He was.

And that is why Jesus also likened this to new wine in old skins.

MATTHEW 9:17Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

MARK 2:22And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

And that is the problem with so many that follow this message. They have tried to add it to their Pentecostal understanding, and it won’t mix.

REVELATION BOOK OF SYMBOLS  56-0617   25    And, oh, my, I love to see God heal His children, certainly. Don't get me wrong. But one reason I been noticing, if you notice lately, I been trying everywhere I go, when I get an invitation, is press in to preach just a little bit. I've let down on my preaching, and it's putting too much on just the anointing and working on the eternal part of the supernatural, rather, that, when, to see visions. And they're wonderful, and I thank God for it; but yet the preaching of the Word is a million miles beyond that, when I see the lame walk, and the blind see.

WE WOULD SEE JESUS  58-0501  E-9  But let me say this: Christianity goes a million miles beyond that. Christianity is presenting a living and a present day Jesus, just the same as He was then, or the Scriptures are wrong. We must face the fact that Christ said these things.

WHY ARE WE NOT A DENOMINATION?  58-0927 59  Why, here's a far greater gift right here. Which would be the best, the gift of the Holy Ghost of wisdom to put the Word of God together and to show the church where we're standing, than just to get somebody healed? We all want to be well; but I'd rather have my soul well, than my body well anytime.

LUKE 5:37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. 38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. 39 No man also having drunk old [wine] straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

As the new wine begins to ferment, it expands and if it has been placed into old skins, it will cause them to burst. New skins are flexible and able to expand with the new wine, but the old skins have been stretched out as far as they will stretch and when the new wine ferments and expands, its just too much for the old skins and they can not take it and they burst open.  And since wine represents the stimulation of revelation, it shows the old established wine holder, the church, can not take new revelation. They are too entrenched in their old thinking and can not take new teaching.  And so they just fall apart when presented with new light.

Anointed ones at end time 65-0725M P:169 Notice, the Scripture now. Teaching a historical God (See?), just like they're trying to live in the past, like, "Well, Wesley said so-and-so; So-and-so said so-and-so," refusing the promised Word of the day, the Manna that's clearly identified of the day. They try to put their old Lutheran, Baptist, Pentecostal wines in our new bottles. It don't work. And our new wine in their old bottles won't work. If they try to put this new wine in the denomination, their folly is made manifest. They can't do it; it blows her up. "Now, brother, I seen the Word of God perfectly by the Word...""Now, look here Doctor, .. We can't have that." Ned, I think you've had some of that lately. "We just can't have that here; now, I would rather that you maybe just go on..." You know. See, it won't work. It blows up. You don't put a new piece of garment in an old garment, 'cause you make it all a rent. See? Didn't Jesus say that? You can't put new wine in old bottles; it blows them up. The new wine's got life in it. All right.

Now, the garment is the garment of His righteousness, and we know the Bride has made herself ready and she is clothed in His Word. And you can not take a new understanding and make it fit with an old understanding. If we are dressed in robes of righteousness, then we are clothed  in robes of right-wise-ness. And right-wise-ness can not be patched onto an old way of thinking. Because in days gone by their right-wise-ness was incomplete, and today we have the full word and their full the full Righteousness or right-wise-ness of God. And that is the Glory which is the Doxa of God. And we are to receive the very mind of God. Then why would we want to place that cloth on an old garment? On an old denominational garment?

Revelation Chapter  19  Verse 8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, (that’s that new cloth,) clean (new) and white(and white stands for purity and virtue, and what is this linen? ): for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.  9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed [are] they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

Presuming 62-0117 P:92  I want to be covered with the garment of the righteousness of Jesus Christ, clothed in His righteousness. Sure. That's the garment we want. Yes, sir.

From the Message Ten Virgins, brother Branham tells us the garment she is to wear is the garment of His Righteousness.

Ten virgins 60-1211M P:147  He clothed me like the father with the prodigal son, put a new garment upon me, the garment, not of mine, His garment of His righteousness He put upon me; and a wedding ring upon my finger, that I'll be with the Bride that day.

And we know that His righteousness is His right-wise-ness. Then that means we are to be clothes in the right-wise-ness of the Revelation of Christ. Notice, right-wise=ness and revelation. Right-wise-ness is the new garment and the stimulation of revelation is the new wine. See how these go together?

Birth pains 65-0124 P:63 Now, watch, watch. The Bible said His wife has made Herself ready at the end of the age. How did She make Herself ready? To becoming His wife. And what did she... What kind of garment she had on? His Own Word. She was dressed in His righteousness.

Mark of the beast 54-0513 P:19 We found the Church standing there in Its beauty, Christ just molded into It. And the Church had a white garment on. And you notice, It was a woman. Around the breast, it had the garment covering over Her shame, and had a golden cord, though, pulled around it that held it around the breast: White, speaking of the righteousness of Christ; and the golden cord represented the Gospel. The preaching of the Gospel brings the Holy Spirit over the Church, the righteousness of Christ; holds it there, tied with the string, the girdle string.

Sudden secret going away of church 58-1012 P:39 So they made themselves ready. So you see, there is a ready to be made. You make yourself ready by joining church or something; that ain't all that's required. You've got to have Oil in your lamp. See? Just your dressing, saying, "We'll build a big church. We'll belong to a better denomination. We'll--we'll give them a pipe organ to the Lord. We'll make plush seats. "That isn't what God requires. Righteousness is what God requires, of His Son, Christ Jesus. That's the garments, for the Bible said, "The white clothes which she is adorned in is the righteousness of the saints."

REVELATION 22:14 Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Now this is a very poor translation because the Greek does not even come close to this. Most translations say, Blessed are they that wash their robes.

NIV Blessed are those who wash their robes…

New American STD Blessed are thse who wash their robes…

Amplified Blessed happy and to be envied are those who cleanse their garments

And this is said in the present tense, not the paste tense. So the correct understanding would be blessed are they who are in the act of cleansing their robes. That is why Paul said in Ephesians, that we are cleansed by the washing of water by the Word.
